It was in January of 1992 when former US Army Staff Sergeant, Albert Howard,
first heard the voice that began his quest for the presidency.
His was in his office at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia when he says he heard the Angel of the Lord.
“I remember exactly where I was standing, it was not an audible voice – it was in my mind. We were kind of talking to each other in my mind back and forth,” Howard says.
He says the voice told him that, “Hillary Rodham Clinton and I would meet and be running against each other and that she would lose.”
Since that fateful day, Howard has had other spiritual encounters that have continued him down the road to the White House.
“I am very sensitive spiritually, so I don’t know how to explain my spiritual side other than I heard [the voice] and that is what makes me distinct and different,” Howard says. “I don’t want to be compromising, but I want people to know that I feel comfortable speaking about spiritual things.”
Now a Michigan resident and father of eight, Howard has finally begun his campaign for office, filing as a Republican in the New Hampshire primary on October 23. This is Howard’s first time running for any office, but what he lacks in experience he makes up for in conviction.
“I am really hoping that people will take me seriously. I am whole-heartedly involved in this campaign,” Howard says. “I certainly believe that if given the opportunity, people will see changes in the first 100 days of my administration”
Howard’s main objective is to bring the Constitution and Bill of Rights back into the political process – something he says the current president has all but forgotten.
“Without question I believe that President George W. Bush should be tried for high crimes and misdemeanors,” Howard says. “The political process is an abomination right now, because we, as the people, are not involved. This man is basically slapping America in the face.”
Howard says that one of the biggest problems America currently faces is the government’s position on preemptive war. He says there should be a declaration of war before invading another country, especially with the current situation in Iraq.
If elected, Howard would immediately end the War in Iraq, shut down the Federal Reserve System and IRS, and withdrawal entirely from the United Nations. He would also make computerized voting illegal in all 50 states due to the lack of a paper trail.
Some of Howard’s positions differ from those of his Republican counterparts, even referring to his own political platforms as “radical.”
“I would consider myself a conservative, but I am a very different candidate because I don’t fit into a mold. I consider each issue, face to face, head on,” Howard says. “I am not going to be pulled like a puppet on a string.”
When he’s not blazing the campaign trails, Howard is the full-time owner of a luxury sedan transportation company, and often picks up celebrities from the Detroit airport.
On June 28 of this year, Howard gave a ride to his most memorable passenger – Chelsea Clinton.
“It was total serendipity,” Howard says. “As a matter of fact that’s what she said when she got out of the car, she said, ‘This is serendipity.’”
During the drive, Howard told Chelsea about his run for presidency - omitting the part about defeating her mother, because he “didn’t think it would be appropriate.”
“I was just honored to see how that happened like that,” Howard says. “Actually I was really nervous having the president’s daughter in the back seat I just wanted to get her to where she had to go.”
Howard’s biggest supporter is his wife, Ingrid, who he met through her church while doing missionary work in Sweden.
Ingrid helps with her husband’s campaign by building and maintaining his Web site, www.alberthoward.org, communicating with the press, and taking photos and videos for his site.
“I am 100 percent supportive of his run for presidency,” Ingrid says. “I have the same vision as he has. We’ve been together for 12 years and it’s been a nice road.”
With eight children all under the age of 12, Ingrid says things have gotten a bit busier at the house since her husband decided to run for president, but he keeps his priorities straight and always puts his family first.
With local and national coverage, and his website climbing in the number of hits each day, Ingrid has high hopes for her husband’s run for office.
“My expectation is fully that he is going to win, that God is going to do a miracle,” she says. “I believe that he can win.”
